Hypnotherapy in Singapore: How it Works & Booking a Session

What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is basically a type of therapy that uses hypnosis to help you make positive changes in your life. It’s not the weird, swinging-pocket-watch thing you see in movies! Instead, a trained therapist guides you into a super relaxed state where your mind becomes more open to suggestions.

When you’re in this relaxed state, your conscious mind (the part that’s always overthinking and judging) takes a backseat. This allows the therapist to work with your subconscious mind, which is where a lot of our habits, fears, and automatic behaviors come from. People use it for all sorts of issues like quitting smoking, managing anxiety, losing weight, or dealing with phobias.

Does hypnosis actually work?

Yes, hypnosis does work – but maybe not in the way you think! Scientific research has shown that hypnosis is a real psychological phenomenon. Brain scans show that when people are hypnotized, their brain activity actually changes. It’s not just pretending or playing along.

That said, it doesn’t work like a magic spell that can force you to do things against your will. Rather, it helps create a mental state where you’re more open to positive suggestions. Studies have found hypnotherapy effective for managing pain, reducing anxiety, and changing habits. However, results vary greatly from person to person. Some people experience dramatic benefits, while others might feel only mild effects. Your belief in the process and willingness to participate play a huge role in how well it works for you.

Is hypnotherapy safe?

Hypnotherapy is generally considered very safe when conducted by a properly trained professional. The relaxed state used in hypnotherapy is natural – it’s similar to what you experience when you’re deeply engrossed in a book or movie. You can’t get “stuck” in hypnosis, and the therapist can’t make you do anything against your will.

That said, there are a few situations where it might not be appropriate. People with certain psychiatric conditions like psychosis or some personality disorders might not be good candidates. There’s also a very small risk that exploring traumatic memories could be distressing for some people. This is why it’s super important to choose a qualified practitioner who has proper training in both hypnosis techniques and psychological principles. Always make sure your hypnotherapist has credentials from a recognized organization and experience dealing with your specific issue.

What are the disadvantages of hypnotherapy?

A disadvantage is that it isn’t a magic fix for everyone. Some people are more “hypnotisable” than others, meaning they can reach that relaxed state more easily. If you’re someone who struggles to relax or let go of control, you might find it harder to benefit from hypnosis.

Another disadvantage is that it can feel a little uncomfortable because adverse childhood events will be explored during the session. However, just like rubbing a bruise to make it heal faster, the same goes with hypnotherapy. Exploring these childhood events will help you release the stuck emotions that hold you hostage.

How much does hypnotherapy in Singapore costs?

In Singapore, a session typically costs between $150 to $300 per hour. More experienced therapists with specialized training or those working in upscale clinics might charge on the higher end of this range. Some practitioners offer package deals if you book multiple sessions, which can save you some money.

It’s worth noting that most insurance plans in Singapore don’t cover hypnotherapy since it’s considered an alternative treatment. However, some integrated health clinics might offer hypnotherapy as part of a mental health treatment plan, which might be partially covered depending on your insurance. If cost is a concern, some therapists offer sliding scale fees or student rates. It’s always good to ask about payment options when you’re making your first appointment.

What happens during a hypnotherapy session?

A typical hypnosis therapy session starts with a chat about what you want to work on and what you’re hoping to achieve. This helps the therapist understand your goals and create a personalized approach. Then comes the hypnosis part – the therapist will guide you into a relaxed state using their voice, often asking you to focus on your breathing or imagine peaceful scenes.

Once you’re in that relaxed state, the therapist will explore past events to pinpoint the root cause of your problem. For example, if you’re trying to overcome a fear of public speaking, they might ask you to recall the first time you felt the fear of public speaking (aka. regression or inner child technique). Finding the root cause allows the problem to be neutralized at its roots, thus conferring lasting change.

The session usually ends with the therapist gradually bringing you back to full alertness. Most sessions last 2 hours.

Do you talk during hypnotherapy?

Yes, you can definitely talk during the session! In fact, many forms of hypnotherapy sessions involve a conversation between you and the therapist while you’re in that relaxed state. The therapist might ask you questions about what you’re experiencing or feeling, and you can respond without “breaking” the hypnotic state.

Some types of hypnotherapy, like regression therapy, specifically require you to talk about memories or past experiences. Other approaches might have you describe images or scenarios that come to mind.

Even if you’re not actively talking throughout the session, you’ll always be able to speak up if something feels uncomfortable or if you have a question. The stereotype of being completely silent and zombie-like during hypnosis is just another Hollywood myth that doesn’t match the reality of therapeutic hypnosis.

How quickly does hypnotherapy work?

The speed of the results really depends on what you’re trying to fix. Some people notice changes after just one session, especially for simpler issues like a specific fear or habit. For example, someone trying to quit smoking might feel less urge to light up after their first appointment.

But for deeper issues like anxiety disorders, trauma, or long-term depression, it usually takes more time. Most people need between 3 to 8 sessions to see significant, lasting results.

Each session builds on the last one, so you’ll often notice small improvements along the way. Your own openness to the process also matters. If you resist during the session, it might take longer to see changes.

Do you fall asleep during hypnotherapy?

No, you don’t actually fall asleep during the session, even though it might look like you are! The hypnotic state feels more like that dreamy zone between being awake and falling asleep. You’re deeply relaxed but still aware of what’s happening around you.

Many people worry they’ll lose control or not remember what happened, but that’s not true for most hypnotherapy. You can still hear the therapist’s voice and you’re able to respond to questions.

Some people describe it as feeling heavy and light at the same time, or like they’re floating. Your mind might wander a bit, similar to when you’re zoning out during a boring class, but you’re definitely not sleeping. After the session, you’ll usually remember most or all of what happened.
